Argument Essay #1

Argument Essay 1st Draft  By: Joshua Williams  Class: 812        Teenagers face many troubles and misadventures. “The Perks of being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, is about a teenage boy named Charlie who has a lot of experience with everyday troubles and misadventures. Through this book, you can see what kind of troubles and misadventures a teenager faces. Although there is one problem. The book, ”The Perks of being a Wallflower” is currently being considered by a panel of parents as unacceptable for middle schoolers to read. I believe that this book should not be banned from middle school libraries because it gives realistic examples of issues and situations that may occur in high school. Furthermore, it gives positive resolutions for kids on how to deal with problems and can help them understand potential issues that they may face one day. Even though the text includes occasional situations concerning child abuse, sexual activity and drug usage; there are examples that are outlined in the book that give positive resolutions to the aforementioned situations about what they shouldn’t expose themselves to. Due to the inappropriate dialogue and adult situations in this book, I believe the appropriate audience for this story would be kids who are at least in 8th grade or high schoolers. However, some parents think that this book should be banned from all school kids, including those in high school as well as middle school. My following argument will substantiate why, ”The Perks of being a Wallflower” should not be banned because it shows kids what they should and should not expose themselves to.        One reason why this book should not be banned is because it potentially sets good examples as to what happens to kids that do drugs and may be drinking at an inappropriate age. If students see how the inappropriate use of drugs and alcohol effects the lives of the characters, then maybe they will think twice before they also try out drinking and drug. I believe that this book can set a good example for kids and therefore sets a positive life lesson for middle schoolers and above.       Another reason why this book should not be banned is that it teaches kids to stand up for themselves as well as others whom are being bullied. Kids who read this book will notice that there are characters who have committed suicide from being bullied or from peer pressure. Kids need to learn how serious a problem this can become for themselves, as well as for others. In the future kids will need to learn how to speak up for themselves or for someone else being bullied.       One final example as to why this book should not be banned is that it demonstrates how actions have consequences. If kids see other examples of inappropriate premature sexual activity, then the book will demonstrate the consequences of having sex at a premature age. The struggles that the characters face will reflect onto the reader. Finally, this book shows the various struggles and misadventures of our main character, Charlie. This book shows the life of an average teenage boy and you get to see  this character’s visual description of the world. Evidently, to some readers, this would cause people to have doubts about their own beliefs and decisions to everyday choices, which could be a good reason to why parents want this book banned. However, this group of parents overlook how this book might set a good example for kids who need a positive influence on what they should and should not do in high school. This helps to show how this book gives positive resolutions to everyday problems making the book a valuable lesson in life’s journey for middle school aged children and above.       In conclusion, the book, ”The Perks of being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, show kids what to do and what not to do in high school. It sets good examples to kids about what kind of everyday troubles they may face and gives the reader a visual on what it’s like to be pushed into the influence of drugs, alcohol, and other misadventures the main character go through.

Do you ever get the feeling that you want to know what kind of problems you may face in your future? Well, the realistic fictional book, “The Perks of being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, can answer that question and allow you to see what kind of troubles and misadventures a teenager faces. Although there is one problem. The book,”The Perks of being a Wallflower” is currently being considered by a panel of parents as unacceptable for middle schoolers to read. I believe that this book should not be banned from middle school libraries because it gives realistic examples of issues and situations that may occur in high school. Due to the inappropriate dialogue and adult situations in this book,I believe the appropriate audience for this story would be kids who are at least in 8th grade (PG-13) or high schoolers. However, some parents think that this book should be banned from all school kids, including those in high school as well as middle school. My following argument will substantiate why,”The Perks of being a Wallflower” should not be banned.
One reason why this book should not be banned is because it potentially sets good examples as to what happens to kids that do drugs and may be drinking at an inappropriate age.      In conclusion, my argument as to whether or not the book,”The Perks of being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, is that this book is appropriate for middle school kids and above.  I believe that middle school kids should have access to this book because it sets a good example for what kids should and shouldn't expose themselves to. This book can help kids to choose the appropriate paths in real life.

Save me, save him
Save them, save us
Our lives are in your hands
But you put us in this situation

Alaska is warming up
No ice or fish for miles
Me and My kin stay gathered at the beach
We wonder how much longer we have to live

35,000 gather to try and stay alive
Each day, we struggle to live
My kin have been dying, one by one
And soon, I will be next, so listen to my prayer

Help me and help my Brethren, Keep them safe
I hope the forces in the sky fell my sorrow
There is death, awaiting my arrival
As I go to him, and say goodbye, for the last time

This poem was based on the global warming effect in Alaska. Walruses are dying everywhere and people need to step up and make a difference. Please, we need your help to save the walruses, before they are all wiped out.

I have chosen to listen to the evening news for five days and report on one news event a night. My response explains what I think of the events that have been occurring in recent weeks. All I could possibly say is that there are people in this world who do crazy, stupid things for unknown and selfish reasons. These behavers causes people to think horribly about the people being reported on. I believe that this is the wrong thing to do. In every news article, there have been comments about what others think about some of the terrible and crazy things people do. I believe that this text will help you, the reader, who may think badly about these people, understand exactly why these people did what they did, to see if your opinion changes.
There is one news story that some might be familiar with. The story about the mother who had just been released from jail after being framed for child abuse by her husband. The father of three children had been abusing them for a long time, and the father had the mother take the fall for his actions. This caused the mother to go in jail. Once the children were taken into custody and told the police the truth about who was abusing them the police arrested the father for abuse. Many people believe that the mother was acting cowardly and should have told the police in the beginning that the father was the real culprit. However, I think that they aren’t thinking about this in the mothers perspective. The mother feared that if she told the police, her husband might try to kill her and there would be no one to protect her children. This shows that the mother confessed to the police out of fear and helplessness. Her willingness to sacrifice herself for her kids is what made her a real hero.
Another news story that others might be familiar with is the news story I jotted down my first night. The article reports the Mayor of Brooklyn, Bill de Blasio, was late for the memorial services for the relatives of the plane crash that killed hundreds of people thirteen years ago. The memorial couldn’t start without Mayor Bill de Blasio. He was carelessly late for something so important seems wrong to me. Some people commented that it couldn't be helped, others commented that even the Mayor makes mistakes. Mayor Bill de Blasio's expression once he finally arrived looked like it was not that big of a deal. I think he didn’t take the ceremony seriously enough and he didn’t care much about not arriving exactly on time. This shows how little Mayor Bill de Blasio cared about this memorial proving even the Mayor does selfish things.
One more news story you might be familiar with is the one I got from my third night while watching the evening news. French tourist replaced the American flag on the Brooklyn bridge with the French flag. This tourist thought that it would be fun to take a selfie on the top of the Brooklyn Bridge as a funny joke. He didn’t realize that he was breaking the law. Some people may think that he was doing this as a sign of French rebellion, but I believe that he did this just for the fun of it. Sometimes, people do dumb things and don’t think about the consequences afterwords. This proves how careless some people can be.
In conclusion, these news stories had sometimes harsh and sometimes sympathetic comments. I wanted to make this text about what I thought about the news stories I wrote down. I hope you feel different about the events once you read my response.

Every day I go to school, as I walk across the public park, I see people with shopping carts filled with clothes and rags, people are sleeping on the benches, and others who are just begging for money on the street corners. Every time I see this, I can’t help but think if those people were going to be alright. I would wonder if they would live until tomorrow? How sad and lonely they must be. The amount of homeless people in our city rises every day. Each day another person is dying from hunger and not many people really care. There are many people who need help. I think we should come up with a plan to save these people and their families. I can think of many ways we can help the homeless population get back on their feet.
One thing that could be done to help people get off the streets is to create more jobs for people who really need them. Creation of better paying jobs would allow homeless persons the ability to make enough money for them to buy food, water, and clothing. This would help people who are poor and lack job security.
Another thing that could help homeless persons get off the streets is to create affordable housing. Housing that keeps the rent at a level that is manageable. Lower rents for persons whose incomes are low. This would prevent the homeless person from being asked to move because they did not have enough money to pay rent increases.
One final suggestion is to create more secure and safe homeless shelters. Shelters that a homeless person would not be afraid to stay at until they gather enough money to afford better living facilities. This would help with the stress and other problems if they had a safe place to sleep at night. I'm sure this would help homeless people who don't have any where else to go.
In conclusion, I feel that others need to be more considerate when they see a homeless person. We need to find better ways to help those in need of money and shelter. There needs to be a grater incentive to encourage people to make charitable donations, build more shelters, and find more people willing to except and ask for help when needed. People can make a difference and I believe that you the reader need to make one too.

I have read the Article,"To Kill or Not To Kill" by Patricia Smith about how Americas solution for humane punishment is starting to fade into torturous suffering. This article shows me that there have been recent sightings that executions have been having efficiency problems. The victims have been taking longer to pass on, resulting to long lasting pain. This puts the question, if we should keep executing our wrongdoers or if we should find a more humane punishment for our wrongdoers. But, before others agree to that, they need to understand exacly how horrible and painful the last couple executions have been.
One example of a horrible execution is the execution that took place in 1999. A man named Lockett was sentenced to death for killing and burying a 19 year old woman. However, during his execution, they gave him a leathal injection, but the untested drug combination of a sedative and paralyzingly agent had failed. Thirty minutes later, he died of a heart attack. Lockett's lawyer, Dean Sanderford said, "It looked like torture". This shows how incredibly dangerous this method of torture is.
Also, another example of how horrible the last few executions have been was in July, it took  nearly two hours in Arizona to execute Joseph R. Wood by lethal injection: a reporter counted 640 gasps before the convicted murderer finally died. "It just looked horrible". said the reporter visiting the execution of Joseph R. Wood. This example shows yet another flaw with the way the government tries to deal with criminals with their own so called humane punishment. The author put these examples in the text to show us that the way the government handles the corrupted citizens in our society is wrong and we as the people need to demand  a new humane way to bring punishment to the criminals of tomorrow.
In conclusion, this article showed me that the execution devices we use today are to dangerous. They are unstable and if we continue to use these execution devices, we will be doing nothing but torturing the people to death. I think the executions should be stopped. I don't know if I have anything to say about my life that can relate to the article that I have read, but I hope that one day things will change and the government will come to their senses and find a better way to bring justice to the criminals we know today. This article made me think about our society differently and makes me hope for change swiftly. I hope you, the reader of this text, will think the same.

You, the reader are probably just another average kid with an average life in an average school. And all you ever have to worry about is parents, homework, school, and many other things. Charlie is the same, he likes to live a regular everyday life. However, as he goes through school pretending that his life is as perfect as can be, you find that he has very big family troubles at home, which affects him, his parents, and his siblings. Yet, through and through, Charlie shows that he is a very affectionate guy who has a very loving bond with him and his family members. Charlie is from the book,"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chysolsky and throughout this essay, you will understand exactly how Charlie has a lovingconnection with his family.
One example of how Charlie has a loving connection with his family is that one day, when Charlie was watching an old romance tale on TV with his Dad, at the falling action of the film, Charlie, for the first time in his life, saw his father cry, and when the father saw that Charlie was watching him, the father asked Charlie to keep it a secret between him and Charlie. Charlie agreed and his father let him sit on his lap till the end of the movie. This shows that even though Charlie's father can sometimes get angry and violent to the fact that he has slapped Charlie throughout several occasions in the ok, he had expressed his true feelings to Charlie, and Charlie was completely fine with knowing how sensitive his father really was proving how much of a loving bond they have.
Also, another example of how Charlie has a loving connection with his family is that when Charlie overheard his sister on the phone with her boyfriend, and told him she was pregnant( just so you know, his sister was only sixteen) Charlie confronted her about what he overheard and his sister
started to cry. Now another thing you should know about Charlie's sister is that she is sometimes very mean to Charlie and in this case, Charlie could have left to his mother and father about her pregnancy in order to get back at her for all she had ever done to him. But instead, he went to her, and hugged her till she finally stopped crying. This can show you exacly how affectionate and caring Charlie can be. His sister was very mean and obnoxious to him throughout his entire life and yet he found
kindness in his heart to comfort her. This shows how much of a loving connection they have with each other.
Finally, one more example of how Charlie has a loving connection with his family is that because when his Great Aunt came to move into his parents home, Charlie was curious to why she had moved there, he asked many times to the point that his Aunt had gotten sad about it to start crying. Then one
day, when his mother explained to him why his Aunt moved( I'm not going to tell you why or else I would spoil the surprise, let's just say that it wasn't good) he went to his Aunt and told her he was sorry for always asking and was sorry for why she left. His Aunt went to tears and gave him a big hug, showing how Charlie was able to admit that he did the wrong thing and that he was sorry for what happened to his Aunt. Proving that he has a loving connection to his family.
In conclusion, yes, you ,ay think that Charlie's connection with his family is just like any other family, but some people may think that Charlie's family is different, even though Charlie had observed his family for years, almost feeling sorry for their troubles and worries, Charlie had always
been there to cheer them up at their best and their worst times. This proves how much of a loving connection their is between Charlie and his family.

What would you do, if you woke up in a random place, where you had no idea where you were, had no memories of who you are, why you were there and you were completely scared and confused. This is how Thomas felt when he woke up in a box that brought him to the Glade in front of over 50 teenage boys he didn't know. And once he set foot on the Glade his life was going to change forever. This happened in a book called "The Maze Runner,"  by James Patterson and it tells the story of Thomas and how he sets on an adventure to find a way for him and his friends to get out of the Glade by travling through the treacherous Maze that surrounds the Area. Throughout the book, Thomas uses his instincts and brains to get through the treacherous trials that await him in the Maze which shows exactly how increadibly smart and skilled Thomas is.
In this book, you will see the constant dangers and troubles the Gladers (the people who live in the Glade) constantly face. You see how the characters are and act, how they feel and how they talk. For instance, while living in the Glade, the Gladers have made a various amount of words and frazes for themselves and for others. In the book, you might find that the characters say words like, " shuck, shank, klunk, shuck it, keeper, slopper and klank." Also you will meet various characters that you might find interesting in this book, like Chuck, a young Glader who was the new arriver before Thomas. Chuck didn't have any friends and found himself always hanging around Thomas, so they naturally became friends. Soon Chuck became very loyal to Thomas and started to create a strong bond with him that would never be broken, proving how strongly they care about each other. Also, another character in the book that you might find interesting is Teresa. Teresa appeared in the box the day after Thomas came which was very strange to everyone due to the fact that a new person shows up in the box once a month. She shared a message to everyone that everything was going to change, and also carried a peculiar note in her hand with another devastating message (but I won't tell you what it said). Teresa is strong and vigilant and has a strong connection to Thomas that she doesn't understand, but she is also smart and clever throughout the entire book and this get's her out of  sticky situations.
In conclusion, "The Maze Runner" by James Patterson is a incredible adventure full of action,  suspense, mystery, and much more aspects that will leave you wanting more. This book may contain  some moments that are good, and some moments that are bad, but if you want to find out what devastating secrets are hidden in the Maze and why the Gladers were sent to the Glade, then read this book to find out.

I don't know if  you know about the old story of Adam and Eve, from the bible, (Or if you believe in that kind of stuff) but I have read a book that is somewhat similar to that same story called "Eve and Adam," by Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate. This book is about a teenage girl named Evening Spiker (Or Eve for short) who is a victim in a car crash and is rushed to her mothers company to have her severed leg treated. Also, while she is at her mothers company Eve is assigned by her own mother to participate in a experiment to create the perfect boy, called, "The Adam Project". However when she participates in this experiment, she uncovers a secret about not only her mother's company, but a secret that could cost her families life. However, Eve was strong and brave through the entire book and showed courageous actions in trying to save her mother and the one boy in which she truly loves which shows how truly brave and courageous Evening Spiker is.
In the book, I also meet another character who is Eve's best friend. Her name is Aislin and she is always willing to be at Eve's side. She is loyal and companionate to Eve but is not very bright when it comes to science. She is very pretty and sometimes overconfident but always knows her limits to how far she can go in trying to either seduce men, or try to pick fights with people she knows she can't win agains. Also, another thing about Aislin is that she is always playing a damsel in destress and usually goes to Eve for help. This is because Eve is always sticking up for Aislin and wants to make sure she makes the right choices in life, this is because she loves Aisalin like a sister and will do anything to protect her.
Also another character you will see in the book is a teenage boy named Solo. He was taken in by Terra Spiker (Eve's mom) and set to work in her company as a bagel boy. However, as he stays at the
company he grows weary of having to live under the protection of Terra Spiker due to the fact that he hates her and tries to uncover dirt about her company to expose Terra for the evil woman she is. But all of that changes when he meets Eve once she comes into the company with a broken foot. Solo gets to know Eve and soon realizes that he was starting to have feelings for her. But when he uncovers a secret about Terra Spiker's company that is so devastating that it would ruin her entire business and may just put her behind bars (Just in case you are wondering what this horrible secret is, you should know that I won't be the one to spoil it for you, you will need to read the book yourself to find out) he debates with the fact that if he gives away this secret, it could ruin not only Terra's life, but Eve's life as well which makes him wonder about which decision he should make (I am also not going to tell you if he exposes Terra or not). That aside, Solo is a brave and strong guy who learns that he cares about Eve and tries to do everything he can to protect her, even when it came to him risking his own life. This shows how far Solo is willing to go due to his love for Eve.
One more thing you should know about this book is that it may contain a large amount of violence, things that might mention guns, deaths, murder, and people who pick fights with one another. This book also may contain people who smoke, drink, punch, kill, steal, do drugs and often the characters might use some inappropriate language. Now if you are against any of these things, or you are not interested in reading a book with such attire, then I suppose this is not a book for you. However, if none of that stuff bothers you, then I guarantee you that this book will take to your liking. I will promise you myself that this book will not disappoint and you will be glued to each page wondering what happens next.
In conclusion, the book,"Eve and Adam" by Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate is a action packed adventure full of romance, sis pence and many of these untold secrets will be revealed. So be sure you get the book,"Eve and Adam" and join Eve as she constantly decides between family and friends, realizes the true meaning of love, and finds her one true sole mate.
